Which Apple Watch Is Right for You?

by Sarah Dobson on March 15, 2021

If you’re thinking about getting an Apple Watch for yourself or as a gift, a timely question is which model will best meet your needs. It’s not hard to decide—just follow along as we walk you through the choices. We’ll compare Apple’s three current models: the Series 3, the Apple Watch SE, and the Series 6

We’ll touch on some of the Apple Watch functions and options that all models have in common. Keep in mind that an Apple Watch requires an iPhone 6s or newer with iOS 14 or newer.

What Does an Apple Watch Do?

An Apple Watch can be your personal fitness partner and help guide you towards leading a healthier life. Because you wear it on your wrist, it can measure the ways you move and offer meaningful insights about your health. Of course, with an Apple Watch, you can also check your emails, browse social media, answer phone calls, and so much more!

Comparing Apple Watches: What’s the Difference?

Familiarizing yourself with the differences can help you decide which model is suitable for you. But first, here’s a few things all Apple Watch models share:

  • GPS/GNSS
  • Water-resistant and swim-proof up to 50 meters
  • High and low heart rate notifications
  • Irregular heart rhythm notifications
  • Emergency SOS
  • Gyroscope
  • Altimeter (only Series SE and SE offer always-on altimeter)
  • Aluminum materials and finishes
  • Apple Pay
  • W3 Apple wireless chip

Apple Watch Differences

Though all Apple Watch models share many of the same Apple Watch functions, there are also some key differences. For example, only the Apple Watch 6 has an always-on retina display. The 6 is also the only model that you can also get in stainless steel and titanium. Apple Watch 6 is also the only model featuring the Blood Oxygen app and an Electrical Heart Sensor via the ECG app.

The Apple Watch is not the only watch on the market that can connect to the iPhone — but it’s the only one that features an Apple operating system, so you know that you’ll get the best connectivity to your iPhone.

What is the Best Apple Watch Option for Me?

Despite their similar physical appearance, each Apple Watch brings something different to the table. When determining which Apple Watch option is right for you, consider the following.

Apple Watch Series 6

The most expensive and features rich model, the Series 6 GPS+Cellular, can do more than just connect to the cellular network. You can leave your iPhone at home and use the watch by itself to make and receive phone calls (using your iPhone’s phone number), send and receive text messages, create reminders, receive notifications, and even stream Apple Music.

Not to mention the Series 6 lets you measure your blood oxygen level with a revolutionary new sensor and app. Measuring your blood oxygen level is a helpful way to keep track of your levels. Keeping track of your levels can be especially beneficial if you’re recovering from COVID-19 or have heart or lung disease. Other Apple Watch functions of Series 6 include the ability to take an ECG from your wrist. You can also check your fitness metrics on the enhanced Always-On Retina display, (now 2.5x brighter outdoors when your wrist is down), set a bedtime routine and track your sleep, and more. Honestly, it’s magical.

The Series 6 GPS+Cellular includes all the features of the Series 6 GPS, so if cellular, meeting your sleep goals, and measuring your blood oxygen levels is a must-have, your decision is simple: buy the Series 6 GPS+Cellular. It starts at $499.99, and you’ll need to pay an extra $10 per month on your iPhone’s cellular plan for connectivity.

If you don’t need cellular or don't want the monthly expense, you can always opt for the Apple Watch Series 6 with only GPS. This model starts at $399.99 and includes all the same bells and whistles, with the exception of cellular connectivity. This means your iPhone will need to be within roughly 100 meters of your Apple Watch in order to send and receive texts, calls, and other notifications.

Nike lovers may be interested in the Apple Watch Nike Series 6. This model allows you to track your workouts, plus you can listen to Audio Guided Runs via the Nike Run Club app. Match your favorite Nike apparel with a collection of Nike watch faces and bands you’ll love. This model states at $399.99.

Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE has the same larger display size Retina display as Series 6, so you can see even more at a glance. Plus, it has many of the same Apple Watch functions as the Series 6, including 32GB capacity. The SE model also features the same case size as its Series 6 counterpart. You can also get it in 100 percent recycled aluminum.

Get your workout on with advanced sensors to track all your fitness and workout goals, and powerful emergency features keep you healthy and safe. The Sleep app lets you set a bedtime routine and track your sleep. You can also set up Apple Pay to pay instantly and securely from your wrist. It’s a lot of watch for a lot less than you expected. Apple Watch SE with GPS starts at $279.99 while Apple Watch SE+Cellular starts at $329.99.

Apple Watch Series 3

The Apple Watch 3 also comes with GPS and GPS+Cellular Apple Watch options. Don’t let the lower price tag fool you — you can still get popular Apple Watch functions that have your health and wellness in mind. The Series 3 features low and high heart rate notifications, Emergency SOS, Breathe watch faces, automatic workout detection, advanced features for runners like cadence and pace alerts, plus so much more. You can share your activity with friends and get personalized coaching right from your wrist.

Not to mention you can stream Apple Music and Apple Podcasts to your wireless headphones. With Apple Watch Series 3, you can do it all with just your watch. The GPS model starts at $199.99 while the GPS+Cellular model starts at $299.99.
