Everything We Love About The 24-inch iMac

by Sarah Dobson on September 20, 2021

For the last 13 years, the iMac design has remained largely unchanged. That is, until the 2021 WWDC where Apple unveiled its new 24-inch iMac. Housing the powerful M1 chip and sporting seven vibrant colors, the new iMac is made to stand out.

The new 24-inch iMac is only 11.5mm thick and weighs less than 10 pounds. Its sleek design makes it easy to move around, yet the strong magnetic power cable ensures a steady connection (not to mention it matches the iMac in color). Gone is the large, Apple-logo chin and thick black bezels around the display. Now, the iMac features a slim, white bezel, designed to avoid throwing off the display’s color balance or distracting the user. Speaking of color, there are now seven exciting shades to choose from:

The color is presented in two tones — the front of the display and the stand come in a more muted color, while a more vibrant color is featured on the back. It doesn't adjust its height, but the iMac display can be tilted for better viewing of the 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with 11.3 million pixels and 500 nits of brightness.

The design changes for the new 24-inch iMac were only possible thanks to Apple's powerful M1 processor. With M1 and macOS Big Sur, the new iMac can instantly wake from sleep, make everyday tasks feel faster, and launch apps with amazing speed. It doesn’t stop there. This impressive duo also boasts of:

  • Up to 85 percent faster CPU performance
  • Up to 2x faster GPU performance for certain apps
  • Up to 3x faster machine learning in apps that leverage the 16-core Neural Engine in M1

Industry testing showed the M1 processor aptly surpassed the base model Intel-based iMacs in single and multi-core operations In fact, the 24-inch iMac runs 56% faster when compared to single-core performance, and 24% faster when compared to multi-core performance. And although the M1 could not quite hold up against the graphics in the 27-inch iMac, the new iMac is still able to handle graphics well.

There are three standard configurations to choose from:

The new 24-inch iMac ships with Apple’s latest Magic Keyboard and a Magic Mouse. The TouchID sensor on the top-right of the keyboard, making logging into the device a breeze. Plus, it makes it that much easier to have multiple users signing in and out of the same computer. Keep in mind, TouchID functionality works only on M1-equipped Macs, so if you connect it to an older iMac, TouchID will not be available. But if you connect it to an M1 MacBook Air, it will be available!

The more advanced 24-inch iMac configurations have two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports and two USB 3 ports. The most basic model has the same Thunderbolt and USB 4 ports, but no USB 3 ports. The ports look identical, but Thunderbolt ports are clearly labeled with lighting icons.
