Apps for Grads!

by Shane Roberts

So you just graduated and now you have this cool new Apple device, whether it is an iPad or a Mac. Now you’re getting ready to head to school, or maybe into the work force, but you’re not sure which apps may help you along the way. Hopefully this will get you on track.

Pages for iOS The app I would recommend above all else, for either a Mac or iPad, would be  Pages. Apple’s homemade version of Microsoft Word, Pages, is what you’d expect out of Apple when it comes to programming. It is easy, elegant, and turns out amazing results.

Pages can import work that was done in Word, and it can also export to Word, PDF, and more! It actually has some great publishing features, so if you wanted to make a poster, flyers, or maybe business cards – it can be done with Pages. With dozens of templates, and the ability to manipulate your documents with ease, makes Pages a must have. It is also an iCloud enabled program, so when you work in Pages, your documents will go into iCloud. What’s great about that is when your are creating a document on one Apple device with Pages, you can continue working on it with another Apple device with Pages. It is all automated as well, so no flash drives or self emailing necessary. You can get Pages for your Mac for $19.99, or your iOS device for $9.99.

In the world of academia, presentation giving is commonplace. For many years while I was growing up, Powerpoint was the presentation software that dominated the landscape. That is likely still the case, but a young up and comer is likely taking its place in many classrooms out there. As I’ve admitted in the past, I’m an Apple fan boy, and I defend Apple software as much as possible. In many cases a program like Excel is needed. However, when it comes to presentation programs, Keynote blows Powerpoint away.

With its easier interface, its much nicer transitions and effects, Keynote is the presentation software that can really engage a crowd. A product that Steve Jobs kept to himself for years for his personal product keynote addresses, Keynote was a program that met his tough standards.

Keynote is cross compatible with Powerpoint, although make sure to look at your slides once you switch presentations from program to program, sometimes the conversation may move images and such.

Keynote, like Pages, is available for both Mac and iOS. It’s $19.99 for Mac and $9.99 for iOS.

canvas for iosMany students out there have become accustomed to the service that many schools use call Canvas (formerly Blackboard). If the iPad is going to be the primary technological tool for a grad (maybe even the iPhone), this app will help them stay up to date on courses, assignments, grades, and class interactions!

This is a virtual must have for any student out there, and it’s free!

dropboxOne of the most no brainer apps out there for a student would be Dropbox. It’s simple, it’s a digital storage area where projects, homework, important documents, and really about anything can be stored.

One great feature of Dropbox, that students should be able to enjoy, is the ability to share folders. So if they are in a group project and want to share files, they can shared folders with others so everyone can access the groups files!

Dropbox has both iOS apps as well as a Mac app. So across devices you have easy access to any documents or files that you have stored.

Dropbox is free, unless you’d like more storage, and a great way for students to have their files stored!

Passwords, we all have them, we all have thousands of them it seems.  If you are a recent high school grad, you probably have a lot of passwords, but the real world brings even more! That’s where an app like 1Password comes into play. 1Password is available for both iOS and Mac, and it gives you the best security you can find, while only having one password. Basically, you have a password to log into the app, and the app will do the password generation and filling for you. You can also store info like credit cards, bank accounts, notes, and more.

1Password also has its own browser for iOS, so you can do all your secure online activities through 1Password if you’d like.

1Password for iOS is $17.99, while it’s $49.99 for Mac.

When a student ventures out on their own, the real world can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, there are so many apps available to make life easier. These are five that can help make things a little easier!

App Spotlight: Pizza Compass

by Shane Roberts

Pizza Compass

Who doesn’t love a good slice of pizza? Whether it is a designer deep dish or a quick grab and go, pizza comes in many flavors and types.

The problem a lot of us may run into, especially if we are in a foreign area, we may not know a good spot to go and grab a pie.

There is an app out there that was made to help us pizza lovers out. Pizza Compass is about as straight forward as it gets. It shows you where the closest pizza joints are with a pizza slice acting as a compass.

pizza compass

It will point you in the right direction, give you the distance, and the name of the pizza joint. If you tap on the name, it will give you reviews from FourSquare. If you spin the pizza slice, it will give you additional locations that are nearby and their distances.

Maybe something isn’t meeting your fancy? Well, tap on where it says ‘Map’ and it will display a map with all the pizza places in a city, neighborhood, really anywhere you direct the map!

Sure you can use the Maps app to help you find your food places, but if you are a pizza lover, and you love a well designed app. Pizza Compass, for 99¢, is for you!

iPad Apps for Mom

by Shane Roberts

Mother’s Day is coming, and a bunch of Mom’s out there will probably be receiving their new iPads. Here are some great apps to help them get started!

iPhoto for iOSThe Photos App on the iPad is a handy basic app for storing photos. If Mom likes to do a little more with her pictures, fix the colors, fix red eye, or maybe put the photos in a journal – then iPhoto for iPad is the app she’ll like. It’s got some similarities to iPhoto for Mac, just optimized for the awesome touch screen of the iPad.

This app is $4.99 and it works for both the iPhone and iPad.

ibooksIs Mom a reader? Then iBooks is a must. The iBooks collection of titles is massive, and it all ties in super easily with your existing Apple ID! So no need to sign up for another account, just use the same one you use to download apps, music, and more.

You can choose from seven different fonts to read with, you can flip the pages, like a traditional book, or make the pages scrollable. You can highlight your favorite passages, add notes to pages, as well as bookmark pages. Can’t find a certain character or phrase? Use the search feature that is built into iBooks! You can also adjust the screen brightness, as well as turn on night reading mode if you like to read at night.

iBooks is a free app, and works across all iOS devices.

food network in the kitchen Does Mom love to cook? This is a great app to help her out! This is in the App Store Hall of Fame and works both on the iPhone and iPad. The recipes on this app are from some of the biggest name chefs out, like Pauala Deen, Guy Fieri, and Rachael Ray.

New recipes are always being added, you can search by chef or ingredient, and save your favorite recipes.  You can also add notes, tips, and substitutions on your favorite recipes.

This is as loaded of a food app as you can find! It’s $1.99 and definitely worth checking out! It’s a lot easier than search through a collection of cook books!

Need help finding a cool app for iPad? Check the App Hall of Fame!

by Shane Roberts

app hall of fame

Is your app collection starting to get stale? Maybe there was an awesome app you heard of a few months ago, and you can’t remember its name. Well, check out the App Store Hall of Fame, it has the most popular iOS apps ever to be released, all in one place. There are a lot of names on there you’d expect – like Facebook, Angry Birds, and The Wall Street Journal.

I’ll highlight three of the Hall of Famers, all three are awesome.

Action Movie FXAction Movie FX is a great one! It’s free, with addition bundle packs for purchase, and it’s available for both iPad and iPhone.

This app can be a lot of fun, because it can inject special effects into a real life shot! You can have everything from a car crash to a missile strike added to your videos!

It’s a lot of fun and is good for a laugh. Check it out!

Pages for iOS Can you have Word on an iPad? That is one of the most common questions a salesperson can receive when it comes to the iPad. Of course, for now, the answer is no. Apple has something better for you, with Pages. A full blown word processor / publisher for both the iPhone and iPad for $10. Just like Pages for Mac, you have a great working, easy to use word processor, that is cross compatible with Word. With the addition of iCloud functionality, you can pick up the work you’ve done on Pages for iPad, with Pages for Mac automatically! Check it out here!
Cut the Rope

One of my personal favorites, Cut the Rope is an amazingly addictive puzzle game. It is available for iPhone for 99¢ and iPad for $3.99. It has a simple concept, get the candy to the little green monster. You have to overcome obstacles and use various tools to help you get the candy from point A to point B. I’m sure many of you have played this, but if you haven’t, give it a shot, it’s awesome. Head here for this classic!

There are many more Hall of Fame apps on the App Store that should be checked out. It’s easy to get to, in the App Store find ‘App Collections,’ and the Hall of Fame section is mixed in with all the other great App Collections Apple has assembled.

Twitter #music is now available on iOS and web

by Shane Roberts

twitter music

Are you a Twitter nut? Are you a Twitter nut that loves music? Then Twitter has a new service and app available for you!

Twitter #music was announced a few days ago, and was made live on the iOS App Store, as well as an online service today.

Twitter #music is cool, but can be a bit deceiving. What it does is show all the popular music and emerging stars that are treading on Twitter, and you can preview what’s popular and trending. It only gives you iTunes previews, so it’s basically a 90-second clip to give you a feel for the song and/or artist. If you want to listen to the whole song, it will direct you to log into Rdio or Spotify. So this is much more of a music discovery app.

It has a very clean user interface, and is easy to use.

twitter music ui

The question with this app is, how will it grow? Will it become a full streaming service eventually? Will this help or hurt Apple’s rumored internet streaming iTunes service (if it even exists).

All-in-all it’s worth checking out if you like discovering music, while seeing what the Twitterverse is listening to, head here for the download!

If you want to give the website a visit, head to music.twitter.com to take a look at what this service is all about.

iPad Apps for Kindergarten & Preschool

by Shane Roberts

apps for kindergarten and preschool

Apple posted another great section on the App Store for those of you who have preschool and kindergarten aged kids (and since updated to apps for elementary kids). There were some really good app recommendations through the various sections.

Possibly my favorite section was the ‘Books’ section, because these books are full blown apps, and not just books. They can be fully interactive, with games, videos, story telling modes, etc.

Here’s a screen shot of some the selection that is offered, click on the image to enlarge:

An app that caught my attention in the ‘Family Time’ section is The Land of Me – Story Time.

Story of Me

This allows you to create your own story with your kids! You can choose the hero and the story they embark on, as well as the tone of the story. This app could really get the creative juices flowing for your children. The app is for iPad only and is $2.99.

Another great app to look into is Bugs and Numbers. Many kids hate the concept of learning math, unless of course it can be made into a game!

Bugs and Numbers

Full of games, puzzles, and activities, this app will help make learning math fun for a child!

This is the main synopsis of the app from the App Store:

Bugs and Numbers provides an extensive collection of unique games dedicated to learning and practicing a wide range of math skills in a non-traditional way. Organized into three basic stages, the app grows with your child through 18 games ranging from basic counting to early fractions. Designed around a bug city, each game is crafted for a basic set of math skills with an eccentric and fun parallel to our own society. Imagine serving bugs food at the local diner that happens to spin on an old vinyl record, or help ferry ants across water in an egg carton. It’s fun, unique, and most importantly, educational.

Bugs and Numbers is for both iPad and iPhone, and is $2.99.

Hopefully this will give you some good apps to help you play with and teach your young ones!
