What’s happenin’: Apple Small Business & a new St. George store

by Tyler Dickman

It’s been a crazy week around the Simply Mac office. This week we are getting the final touches on our new St. George store that is opening next Monday. The staff here are all on their A game, and now that we’ve opened a few stores, we are getting it down to a science. I’ve got to say, it’s pretty cool to see everyone around the office knowing their roles and working like a well-oiled machine.

Yesterday we spent the day in our corporate offices hosting a small business workshop that was put on by Apple’s Small Business training team. We had the opportunity to spend the day with other local representatives from Expercom, Mac Docs, Pictureline, and even another Apple reseller from Northwest Data Systems who made the trek all the way from Steamboat Springs, Colorado to attend the training. It was great to have a community of competing specialists together in one room working towards one goal, which ultimately was to learn how to better support you, our customers. Apple did a great job of helping break the ice between the specialists, and I think we all learned a bit about each other and our businesses. We really do have a great community of local businesses to support your Apple needs.

Today and tomorrow most of us will be on our way to St. George for final preparations. Steve, our President, will be hanging back to spend time with John Brandon from Apple on Friday. John is a senior VP at Apple and manages all of the channel sales divisions, including the resellers, specialists, Value Added Resellers, and national retailers across North America and Asia. It’s a great honor to have John take the time out of his busy schedule to stop in Utah to tour our stores.

If you are in St. George any time after Monday, stop by our store. We will be hosting another huge grand opening event on Saturday, August 28th at 10 am. Click here for details on the big day and look for a link soon where you can enter to win one of the many prizes we will be giving away including MacBooks, iPods and tons more!

Be sure to sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date on new product releases and special deals you won’t want to miss.

OS X App Spotlight: Plex

by Matt Midgley

Plex Icon

If you’re anything like me, you’ve amassed a decently huge library of movies, television shows, documentaries, and music. It doesn’t even have to be all that large to start becoming a bit unwieldy to keep managed and organized. Apple has included a program called Front Row in OS X, and that helps quite a bit, but for the media collector who wants more options, you’ll want to look at a third-party media manager app.

There are a number of options available, but there’s almost no need to look past Plex. Originally part of the XBMC project, Plex, like Front Row, acts as a simple interface for accessing your media. Plex offers much more than Front Row, across the board. You can access your locally-stored videos and music, of course, but you can also effortlessly stream from dozens online services such as Hulu, Netflix, BBC, etc. Add to that built-in support for every video codec imaginable, as well as automatic downloading of album artwork, movie posters, information, and you’re only scratching the surface of what Plex begins to offer.

What good is capability, though, if it just doesn’t look that great? As Apple users, we’ve become accustomed to slick, beautiful interfaces that don’t interfere with our productivity. Luckily, Plex is just that. For those for whom the default interface doesn’t quite cut it (and the default interface is pretty sweet), Plex is fully skinnable, and there are a number of great alternatives out there for the downloading (Check out Aeon, in particular).

You can download Plex by clicking here. For those who have used it before, or who are giving it a try for the first time, let us know what you think!
